How Can Artists Advise Clients on Aftercare to Prevent Fading?

Fading is one of the most prevalent factors in both clients and artists. Although the quality of ink and technique are important, aftercare is very crucial in determining the extent to which the tattoo lasts. As a tattoo artist, you need not stop at the point where the needle stops; you have to tell your clients how to take care of their tattoos properly.

The blog addresses one of the most frequently asked follow-up questions that clients (and even artists) might have regarding aftercare that can reduce fading.

Why Does Proper Aftercare Matter So Much in Tattoo Longevity?

The tattoo ink is then placed in the dermis, and when the skin does not heal appropriately, it may dislodge the ink or scar, which leads to fading. Aftercare will provide even healing of the skin, secure pigment, and keep the design safe against environmental effects, including sun exposure and infection. Inadequate aftercare is the number one most likely cause of fading.

What Should Clients Avoid Immediately After Getting a Tattoo?

The clients should not:

  • Putting unwashed hands on the tattoo
  • Sleeping in the swimming pools, oceans, or hot tubs
  • Applying the tattoo to the direct sunlight
  • Putting the tattoo under tight or harsh clothes
  • Courageous use of alcohol based or fragrant lotions

These practices may serve as a source of bacteria, slow the healing, and premature breakage of ink.

How Should Clients Clean Their Tattoos in the First Week?

Artists ought to refer customers:

  • Rinse with water of moderate temperature bi-to-tri-daily with a plain, perfume-free soap.
  • Blot the spot with a fresh paper towel (do not rub).
  • You can apply a new ointment or aftercare balm (as recommended by an artist) in a thin layer.

Irritation and ink dispersion can happen through excess washing or scrubbing; therefore, it is essential to be moderate and delicate.

When Can Clients Start Using Lotion, and Which Type Is Best?

After the tattoo is at least a few days dry and flaky, generally Day 3 to Day 5, clients will want to begin using a non-scented and hydrating lotion (with no petroleum and alcohol). Examples include:

  • Eucerin Advanced Repair Lotion
  • Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion
  • Hustle Butter- Deluxe

Maintaining a hydrated skin surface will help avoid having the scabs crack, which may be able to pull pigment out, resulting in fading.

How Important Is Sun Protection for Tattoo Preservation?

One of the biggest contributors to the fading of tattoo inks is sun exposure, where the colored ink is the most affected. After the tattoo healed (in about ~4 weeks), recommend:

  • Apply a high spectrum of SPF 30 or above.
  • Apply sunscreen repeatedly every 2 hours of exposure.
  • Where possible, cover up tattoos with clothing or shade.

Even treated tattoos are liable to fade in UV rays with time, and therefore, there is a need to protect the sun throughout life.

Can Improper Aftercare Lead to Tattoo Infection or Permanent Damage?

Yes. The following can be causative of infections:

  • Scarring
  • Ink bleeding/blowouts
  • Uneven healing

The consequences of these are not only the loss of ink but also a distortion of the design. Responsible aftercare guidance includes educating clients to pay attention to the initial indicators of infection (e.g., swelling, pus, fever) and to seek medical assistance.

Careful aftercare tips can promote your image, performance, and recommendations, making it a win-win situation between the artist and the client. One can connect with the artist on Facebook or Instagram for further assistance.
